Frequently Asked Questions

Kilchoan Estate is a place apart—remote, unspoiled, and intentionally unhurried. The information below is designed to help answer common questions as you plan your stay, from getting here to how life on the estate unfolds. Should anything remain unclear, our team is always happy to assist.

Where is Kilchoan Estate located?
Kilchoan Estate is set on Scotland’s remote west coast, in Knoydart—often referred to as “Britain’s last wilderness.” The estate is surrounded by mountains, sea lochs, and ancient woodland, offering a rare sense of privacy and scale. Google Map link here

How do we get to Kilchoan?
The most convenient airport is Inverness, followed by a scenic drive of approximately three hours through the Highlands to Mallaig. From Mallaig, guests take a short ferry crossing to Inverie, where our team meets you and transfers you to the estate (approximately five minutes).

Glasgow is another option with broader international connections, though the drive is longer.

Can Kilchoan arrange transfers?
Yes. We are happy to assist with private transfers, drivers, or tailored routing once travel plans are confirmed.

What accommodations are available?
Kilchoan offers a collection of thoughtfully restored and newly built cottages, each designed for comfort, privacy, and a strong connection to the landscape. Options range from intimate two-bedroom cottages to larger homes suitable for families and multigenerational groups.

What is the best option for families or multigenerational stays?
For larger or multigenerational groups, the Farmhouse is often the best fit, offering generous shared living spaces alongside private bedrooms. Our team is always happy to advise on the best configuration based on group size and ages.

What is included in the rate?
All stays at Kilchoan are fully inclusive, covering:

All meals
All beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)
Daily housekeeping
Full access to the estate and its grounds

How does dining work?
Dining at Kilchoan is relaxed and in keeping with the setting:

Breakfast is self-prepared in your cottage. Each cottage has a fully equipped kitchen, and we ensure it is thoughtfully stocked in advance.
Lunch is provided as a packed lunch to enjoy anywhere on the estate.
Dinner is served each evening in the Long House, our communal dining and bar space.
Dietary preferences and allergies are happily accommodated with advance notice.

Is Kilchoan similar to Dunton Hot Springs?
While the setting and rhythm are different, the philosophy is very much aligned. Kilchoan offers the same sense of warmth, generosity, and understated luxury—just expressed through the lens of the Scottish Highlands.

Is Kilchoan suitable for children?
Yes. Families are very welcome at Kilchoan, and many guests enjoy sharing the estate across generations. Activities and pacing can be tailored to suit both adults and children.

How long should we stay?
We recommend a minimum of two to three nights, though many guests find that longer stays allow for a deeper, more unhurried experience of the estate and surrounding wilderness.
